Family Council
A Family Council in the context of a long-term care home (LTC) is an organized, self-led, and democratic group composed of family members and friends of the residents. These councils come together every 3 months for several purposes:
- Peer Support:
- Family Councils provide mutual support to family members who share similar experiences. Connecting with others who understand the challenges of having a loved one in long-term care can be invaluable.
- Education:
- Family Councils offer a platform for learning about the LTC home and its operations. They often invite guest speakers to discuss relevant topics, such as meaningful visits with residents who have dementia, power of attorney, and end-of-life care.
- Advocacy and Problem-Solving:
- Family Councils advocate collectively to improve residents’ quality of life. They address concerns related to the home and work toward positive changes.
- These councils are independent and organized by family members themselves, not by the nursing home staff.
In summary, Family Councils aim to create safe, vibrant, and supportive LTC homes for residents, families, and staff. They provide emotional support, educational resources, and a platform for addressing shared concerns within the long-term care system.
